Figure Drawing

I signed up for a figure drawing class back in february to finish my art minor requirements. Figured I’d post my progress here.

Our first assignment was to submit our latest figure drawings from before the class started. I took another figure drawing class about and year and a half ago and so I submitted my best couple of drawings from back then.

The class is coming to a close now and I’m happy with the progress I’ve made in just a few months 👨‍🎨 Here are some of my best drawings from the semester.

Progress

Once the models started showing up (we didn’t have models for the first few weeks due to some budget issues, what a relief!) we got into a pretty good routine. 3 hours: 10 two-minute gestures, then a few 5-10 min poses, some 20 min, and finally a long pose until time ran out.

Gestures

By the end of the class, the 2-minute gestures became my favorite part of the drawing process. It’s strange how similar the 2-minute gestures and the 5-minute drawings end up feeling. Those extra 3 minutes seem to disappear. These are some of the better ones.

First few weeks

There was no model scheduled for the first few classes, so we all drew from the projector. A little disappointing, but a good way to ease into it in hindsight.

We were assigned 30 two-minute gestures to do at home for the first few weeks. It’s definitely a struggle for me to stay loose and work quickly. These are the first drawings I did for the class. Nothing worth sharing, but hopefully helps to show my progress.

Portraits

We spent a little bit of time drawing faces too. I’ve always struggled with drawing faces and so this was an area I was happy to spend some extra time on.

Painting

We also had a couple of painting projects. The first was a grisaille self-portrait. Color is one of my favorite aspects of painting so this one took me out of my comfort zone a bit. The second portrait (our final) is still a WIP at the moment.
